Perko In-Line Check Valves
Perko In-Line Check Valves: Precision Fuel Management for Your Boat
When it comes to keeping fuel where it belongs — in the tank and not back up the fill hose — Perko has long been one of the most trusted names in marine hardware. Their line of in-line check valves reflects decades of attention to the unique demands of marine fuel systems, addressing two of the most common and frustrating refueling problems boaters face: wellback (fuel reversing back out through the fill line after refueling) and spitback (fuel splashing back up through the vent line).
How Perko ICVs Work
These normally closed valves are opened by the presence of fuel running down the fill pipe during refueling. When fueling stops, the valve closes again, creating a reliable one-way barrier that protects your bilge, your deck, and the environment from unwanted fuel migration. ICVs are used to help prevent wellback — the reverse flow of fuel out the fill after refueling is completed — and spitback.
Innovative ICV Designs: Beyond the Traditional In-Line Valve
What sets Perko apart in this category is a commitment to engineering solutions that simplify installation and reduce potential failure points. Rather than offering only traditional in-line valves that require cutting into a hose run and adding clamps at both ends, Perko has developed several alternative approaches:
- In-Hose Flapper Valves (Fig. 0635): Perko's patent-pending "Flapper Valves" fit inside the hose itself, with in-hose ICVs mounting inside standard 1‑½" or 2" fill hose near the connection to the fuel tank. This design replaces in-line ICVs, eliminating 4 hose clamps and 2 leak points.
- In-Pipe ICV (Fig. 0636): Perko's "In-Pipe ICV" fits inside the fuel inlet fitting itself, replacing in-line ICVs and eliminating 4 hose clamps and 2 potential leak points.
- Compatibility: Valves are designed for use with both plastic and metal fuel tanks, making them suitable for a wide range of vessel types and fuel system configurations.
Performance and Standards
Perko's in-hose check valves are built for real-world marine performance. They are pressure tested in accordance with ABYC H-24 and allow for full 68 LPM flow rates. For boaters working with standard U.S. flow measurements, the in-pipe ICV allows for full 18 GPM flow rates, ensuring that fueling speed is not compromised by adding the valve to your system.
Combo Solutions for Complete Fuel System Protection
For boaters who want comprehensive protection, Perko also offers combination packs pairing their ICV with a surge protector. Installing an Inlet Check Valve in the fill hose and a Surge Protector in the vent line can significantly reduce spitback and wellback during the refueling of most boats. Perko's patent-pending in-line surge protector functions both as a fill limit valve — assisting in pump auto shut-off — and a check valve to prevent wellback in the vent line.
Whether you're retrofitting an existing vessel or specifying components for a new build, Perko's engineered approach to in-line check valves offers a cleaner, lower-leak-point solution compared to conventional hardware.
