Tremco Butyl Tape: A Legacy of Sealing Expertise
Tremco has been a trusted name in construction sealants and weatherproofing since 1928. Founded by William Treuhaft in Cleveland, Ohio, the company began as a small roofing materials manufacturing plant and has since grown into one of the most recognized names in building envelope solutions. Within the world of butyl tape, that same depth of expertise is on full display.
The Tremco 440 Tape: Engineering That Stands Out
Tremco's flagship butyl tape product is the Tremco 440 Tape. The Tremco® 440 Tape is a 100% solid polyisobutylene cross-linked butyl, preformed sealant. What makes this significant is what the formula deliberately leaves out: the 100% solids compound of butyl and polyisobutylene contains no solvents or other volatiles that could escape on exposure, causing shrinkage and sealant failure.
The Tremco 440 Tape is a high-performance, pre-formed glazing and sealing tape engineered for dependable adhesion and long-term flexibility in residential and low-rise commercial construction. It is available in multiple sizes and colors — including black and gray — to suit a wide range of framing and aesthetic requirements.
Where Tremco 440 Butyl Tape Gets to Work
One of the hallmarks of the Tremco 440 is its versatility. It is commonly used for non-compression glazing of vision lites and spandrel panels in PVC, metal, and wood frames for low-rise buildings and residential construction. But its utility extends well beyond glass: the tape is also well suited for lap sealing between steel, aluminum, and porcelain panels, as well as sealing joints subject to shear movement between similar and dissimilar materials.
Tremco 440 forms a watertight seal to prevent water infiltration, has superior weather resistance, remains permanently elastic even at low temperatures, and is adaptable to many different types of glazing systems. This combination of flexibility and tenacity makes it a go-to choice for both in-plant fabrication and on-site installation.
Two Product Lines for Compression and Non-Compression Systems
Compatible with acrylic and polycarbonate sheeting, pressure bar systems, slope glazing, and more, Tremco's butyl glazing tapes come in two types: Tremco 440 Tape and POLYshim II Tape. POLYshim II Tape from Tremco was designed to work with other compatible sealants and PolyWej gaskets, which fit over a special metal nub; it also works in non-compression glazing systems that won't compress the tape to the shim, which protects the system against over-compression. Together, these two options cover the full spectrum of glazing needs.
