Progrip Handlebar Grips: Italian Craftsmanship at Your Fingertips
Few brands are as closely tied to the motorcycle control interface as Progrip. The company behind the name, Plastiche Cassano, has manufactured its products since the first company was founded in 1925 in Italy . Its earliest grips were made of buffalo horn, which was boiled, dried and lathed, and production later shifted to plastics after World War II. Today, handlebar grips remain the heart of the Progrip lineup, and the range covers nearly every riding discipline.
Dual-Density Technology and GONT Compound
What sets Progrip grips apart is their multi-compound construction. The brand's duo-density designs use a proprietary GONT compound in two densities: one for extra grip on the bars to minimize movement, and the other on the outside of the grip to provide superior comfort and vibration absorption. In practice, this means a firmer inner layer that resists twisting on the bar and a softer outer layer that keeps your hands comfortable over long rides. Some models go further: the Triple Density 791 features firm material on the inside, gel on the outside and medium material in the middle.
Popular Progrip Grip Families
Progrip offers grips tailored to specific riding styles. A few of the best-known designs include:
- 717 Road/Race grips: The iconic 717 grip is recognizable from the distinctive slash cuts, and it is an open-ended design popular on sportbikes.
- 724 Dual Density Road grips: a sleek tread pattern with a harder inner compound for bar grip and a softer compound toward the hands, aimed at reduced fatigue.
- 838 and 780 race grips: performance-focused designs for track and spirited street riding.
- 797, 801 and 788 MX grips: dual- and triple-density off-road options, including slimmer, non-waffle styles.
- 719 RVGS and 862 Touring gel grips: gel-equipped designs that prioritize vibration damping for long-distance comfort.
- 842 Cruiser and 727 ATV grips: options built for cruisers and quads.
Choosing the Right Progrip Grip
Start with your bar diameter and end type. Many road grips fit 7/8" (22mm) bars, and open-end grips suit most sportbikes, while closed-end versions are common elsewhere. Consider grip length too, since it needs to fit your throttle tube and switch housing. Riders who log long highway miles may prefer gel-equipped touring models, while racers and track riders often favor firmer, more responsive compounds. Off-road riders should look at the MX range, where waffle or non-waffle patterns affect both feel and glove interaction.
Installation matters as much as selection. Clean the bar thoroughly and use a little plain water or a suitable grip adhesive so the grip slides on easily, then give it time to set before riding.
