Gates HeatGuard®: Purpose-Built Thermal Hose Protection
When hose assemblies operate near extreme heat sources — engine compartments, welding areas, steel mills, oil rigs, or hot asphalt construction equipment — standard hose coverings simply aren't enough. Gates, a global leader in fluid power and power transmission solutions founded in 1911, engineered its Thermal Protective Hose Sleeve and Tape Kit line specifically to address the dangers that radiant heat, open flame, and molten metal splash pose to critical hose assemblies.
The HeatGuard® System: Sleeve and Tape Working Together
At the core of Gates' thermal protection offering is the HeatGuard® Protective Sheathing system, a fully integrated sleeve-and-tape solution. HeatGuard is a completely non-asbestos, heat-resistant protective sleeving constructed from white knitted fiberglass yarn woven and coated with iron oxide red silicone rubber. It installs easily over most hose and couplings, requiring only hose clamps or wire ties for fastening.
The system is completed with HeatGuard Tape, which is designed as a companion product to the sleeving. The tape is used to secure the ends of HeatGuard sleeving and carries the same fire and temperature rating as the sleeving itself — ensuring that the protection at the sleeve terminations is never the weak point of the assembly.
Gates HeatGuard Tape is designed to provide a non-adhesive insulating wrap that can be used as a substitute for HeatGuard protective sheathing, offering resistance to molten metal splash, radiant heat, abrasion, corrosive atmosphere, moisture, chemicals, vibration, and electricity.
Impressive Temperature Range and Hi-Temp Variants
The standard HeatGuard system delivers a wide operating window, but Gates also offers a HeatGuard Hi-Temp variant for the most demanding environments. The Hi-Temp sleeve handles a continuous temperature range of -54°C to +260°C (-65°F to +500°F), with short-term tolerance up to +1093°C (+2000°F) for 15 to 20 minutes, and up to +1650°C (+3000°F) for 15 to 30 seconds. The Hi-Temp variant meets SAE AS1072E specification , making it a credible choice for aerospace-adjacent and heavy industrial applications.
Where Gates Thermal Sleeve Kits Are Used
HeatGuard is engineered for use in welding areas, engine compartments, steel mills, oil rigs, and hot asphalt construction — essentially any application where hose is exposed to high temperatures. The sleeve-and-tape kit approach means technicians have everything they need to fully protect a hose run, from mid-span coverage to properly sealed ends, without mixing and matching protection ratings from different manufacturers.
Why Gates for Thermal Hose Protection?
Gates Industrial Corporation, based in Denver, Colorado, is a manufacturer of power transmission belts and fluid power products used in diverse industrial and automotive applications. That breadth of engineering experience means Gates designs its thermal sleeve and tape products with the full system in mind — the same hose, couplings, and fittings that Gates already manufactures. The result is protection that is matched to the real-world performance of Gates hose assemblies, rather than being a generic afterthought.
HeatGuard can pay for itself in reduced replacement and maintenance costs by extending the life of hose assemblies that would otherwise degrade prematurely from heat exposure. For fleet operators, equipment builders, and maintenance professionals working in high-heat environments, that reliability calculus makes Gates thermal protective kits a straightforward investment.
